"Blue, Painful, Fragile" was a somewhat interesting movie albeit quite a bit "rough around the edges", IMO.
The plot, while a bit vague (at times), and with a few wrinkles along the way, was a plus for me. The movie is shifty and revolves around loneliness, jealousy, being afraid, friendships, relationships and, well... living. Also, about wanting to be yourself and as best as you can be.
I enjoyed the overall acting and the main leading duo definitely solidly stood out: Ryo Yoshizawa and Hana Sugisaki. Quite different characters, with their own personalities and the movie, in a way, is about their "relationship".
While the whole "Moai" club is front and center, it's evolution is a bit vague (and cast…

The movie should rather be called "Today's episode of why men suck"

He could have just yelled at her to lawyer up and be done with it.
I do not wanna spoil the twist/major plotpoint so I will keep this short but after a first half that frankly left me totally cold and also a bit perplexed (how did that club get so big? what universe is this? how is this happening in general? which i think is maybe due to the film's structure as it makes more sense later on), I had some hopes for the second half as it seemed to try (idk if it was intended or just for the sake of the twist) to deconstruct the lead's (since it is a subjective pov film) and our own preconceptions…

So I guess this is another one of those Its mostly me I’m not really the target audience for this I suppose. There was a lot of teen angsty emotional moments/scenes some really well done while others probably not necessarily needed. I guess I thought maybe it got a little bit too much. Nevertheless I think the highlight of the film though is the acting. Everyone stood out immensely well especially the main lead.
.
This is basically one of those films where you’re either going to love it or not. It’s still a nice movie to watch.

This a perfectly fine movie. Not amazing, but not terrible like these reviews make it out to be. I really appreciate how the protagonists' character flaw is his imposter syndrome and consequent cognitive dissonance - a very real and very destructive invisible threat. Suffering from it myself, I found that so many of his thoughts and expressions mirrored my own when I get jealous, lonely or frustrated. It's a clever approach to making him feel human by showing how misplaced his vendetta is.
This film reminded me of an important lesson: don't act out of jealousy and spite. Malevolence begets regret.
These three quotes sum up the sentiment and heart of the film for me -

It feels like I've watched 3 seasons in a row of a regular netflix show. There's so much stuff going on but none of it really matter...

I'd be lying if I say I have full grasp on what this film wanted to convey. Tbh I wasn't able to watch this in one sitting. Well, at least I got to see good Yoshizawa Ryo closeups.

ughhh this is painfully Jdrama-like (which is not good for a movie. I checked the director and it's NTV drama director so, no wonder.)
Bad cinematography, bad coloring, bad lighting and episodic (drama like) story telling.
Don't know...it lost my interest very early on.

if you're expecting a logical youth movie, this ain't it. this is the kind of Japanese film that want you to watch the story unfolds with your heart. feel it in your bones, immerse yourself in the characters. and if you're not the type who can do that, I don't think this movie will satisfy you. it is, after all, a character-driven film and one that relies heavily on tapping our flaws as human beings.

Edit: changed its rating from 4 to 3 stars and I blame the directing, camera work and lighting as well as tones. simply put, they're disappointing.
