As Gunney Sgt. Tom Highway, Clint shares his love of getting STDs, his hatred of hippies, suckheads and all civilian authority, reconnects with his ex-wife and turns a platoon of candy-asses into life-takers and heartbreakers in time to redeem the US Marines' record of one loss in Vietnam and one tie in Korea with a stunning upset victory against the island of Grenada. Hoo-ra!

Clint Eastwood A Retrospective - Week 31
Marine Sgt. Thomas Highway (Clint Eastwood) is a decorated veteran of two wars. On his last posting before retirement, he is surrounded by officers with no combat experience who view him as an odd, even dangerous, holdover. Highway is assigned to train a group of undisciplined recruits including Cpl. Stitch Jones (Mario Van Peebles), a slick hustler who has previously encountered Highway. As the old soldier prepares his men for a war they don't believe will come, the U.S. invades Grenada.
An aging Clint Eastwood, playing a discipline-challenged U.S. Marine Corps gunnery sergeant named Tom Highway (as in, "it's my way or the Highway"), gets a new lease on military life by being…

Review by chavel ★★ 10
By the time Clint Eastwood started winning Oscars, he was the epitome of classical craftsmanship outclassing the rest of Hollywood. But you only need to go back to the mid-80’s and find a pic like Heartbreak Ridge to see how ragged a director he could be on his worst day. Eastwood also stars as a semi-disgraced marine sergeant assigned to muscle-up a bunch of yellow belly recruits (Mario Van Peebles as a weekend rock n’ roller is the only entertaining supporting character). None of these boys know how to keep their own barracks clean and there’s nothing about them that screams “unit” until hardass Eastwood crams toughness into them.
Eastwood gets off the bottle, reads some womens’ fashion mags to…

“I was there when the sh*t hit the fan at Grenada. I saw it all go down at Grenada!”
-Wayne Gale-Goddamn do I love Clint Eastwood. Even in a janky, vanity project 80’s wank like this. Hell, especially in a janky, vanity project 80’s wank like this. I pray that at 56 years of age I appear even half as badass as he did. Dude’s face looks like it’s carved out of granite here. The military flat top is a great look for his receding hairline and crowning bald spot. I’ll remember that.
The script for this is pure cancelled 101. A non-stop barrage of hom*ophobic one-liners and crude misogyny. Didn’t stop me from horse laughing at all of…

Review by Filipe Furtado ★★★½
Clint Eastwood as an aging marine instructor making men out of Mario Van Peebles and a bunch of other young recruits. It is all brash comedy with an action climax. Lots of insults intercut with scenes of camaraderie between the soldiers. The entire thing is the closest to a 60s John Wayne film Eastwood was ever involved with. Almost everyone (from the recruits to Everett McGill young officer who just doesn't get it including the veteran friends and Marsha Mason's ex-wife) are very stock, but there's something very moving about Eastwood soldier on his last legs. Heartbreak Ridge is a movie predicted in the disconnect between the vulgar comedy and the old man forced to acknowledge his own mortality. Between…

Review by comrade_yui ★★★
clint eastwood's top gun, in which he takes a bunch of lazy young hotshots reminiscent of the space marines in aliens and forges them into an elite fighting force. all of his military sergeant's dialogue is badass one-liners and gruff quips, mario van peebles moonlights as an awful musician at marine divebars, and the jingoistic hom*oeroticism endemic to reagan's america is through the stratosphere. it's definitely too long, but i would be lying if i said that i didn't enjoy all the caustic machismo on display. seeing this after cry macho really showcases how eastwood has evolved as an artist; i don't think he's interested anymore in the histrionic tough guy bullsh*t that is heartbreak ridge's bread & butter.

Imagine the first half of Full Metal Jacket if we were meant to think that R. Lee Ermey's Gunnery Sergeant Hartman is really cool.

A solid film but a bit underwhelming. Eastwood was great but everything else felt a little watered down. This could have been far more intense and emotional than it was. Played everything a bit too safe.
